On a steamy afternoon at Saratoga Race Course, where Street Sense reasserted himself as the star sophomore in the country, a new three-old star was born as La Traviata remained unbeaten with an easy 9 ¼-length score in the fifth running of the Grade 3, $114,700 Victory Ride for three-year-old fillies at six furlongs. Trained by Patrick Biancone, the daughter of Johannesburg, a $1.1 million public action purchase in 2006, easily beat a field on Saturday that included some other talented fillies such as Allude, Graeme Six and Appealing Zophie, who finished third. Half Time Crown, a 54-1 longshot took the place spot. “There’s nothing much to say; she’s unbelievable,” said Biancone of the filly who is now 3-for-3 at different tracks: Churchill Downs, Monmouth and Saratoga. “Today, she took the lead and relaxed. She was waiting for the ones to catch up to her. The plan is to do what we have done and that plan is to go the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint.” The $1 million, six-furlong Filly & Mare Sprint is a new addition to the Breeders’ Cup World Championships, and will be run at Monmouth Park on October 26. After stumbling at the start, jockey Julien Leparoux guided La Traviata to a quick two-length lead as Appealing Zophie, Magical Ride and Half Time Crown gave chase through fractions of :22.13 for the quarter and :45.20 for the half. As the field turned for him, La Traviata rapidly opened up the lead while Half Time Crown cruised past Appealing Zophie for the runner-up spot. “I didn’t have to do much too much,” said Leparoux. “She did it herself. It’s nice. When she switched leads in the stretch, she just went. So far, she has done everything perfect.” La Traviata covered the six furlongs in 1:09.78. Owned by Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith and John Magnier, La Traviata pocketed $68,820 with the win to increase her lifetime earnings $129,248. Appealing Zophie was third, followed by Debbie Got Even, Graeme Six, Allude, Time’s Mistress, Magical Ride, Russian Gypsy and Musical Start. Featherbed, Street Sass and Ticket to Seattle were scratched. |
