Hot Dixie Chick Struts Stuff in Grade 1 Spinaway | |

If you’re trainer Steve Asmussen, how do you follow the mesmerizing and historic victory of superstar filly Rachel Alexandra against older horses in the Grade 1 Woodward? Why, you show up to Saratoga Race Course the following day and take the 118th running of the Grade 1, $300,000 Spinaway for 2-year-old fillies with the blazing Hot Dixie Chick. In a performance that belied her relative inexperience, the undefeated Hot Dixie Chick pressured the pace set by long shot Bickersons through a half-mile in 45.19 seconds, then scooted through an opening on the rail and pulled away from the field to win the seven-furlong race Sunday by 1ľ lengths in 1:22.28. Beautician, second to Hot Dixie Chick in the meet-opening Grade 3 Schuylerville, played second fiddle again when 8˝ lengths clear of third-place finisher Bickersons. Owned by Barbara Banke’s Grace Stables, Hot Dixie Chick kept the weekend winning in the family. Banke is the wife of Rachel Alexandra’s owner, Jess Jackson. After the Spinaway, Banke mentioned that the “Grace” in her stable name stands for “Girls rule and competently endure,” and Hot Dixie Chick certainly lived up to the motto. “Today she was very professional and maintained her margin to the wire,” Asmussen said in the winner’s circle. “Obviously, today she reached a new level. She’s got a mind that’s spooky. She’s extremely laid back. (Assistant trainer) Scott (Blasi) said she was lying down in the holding barn. Her demeanor is why she’s stabled next to Rachel (Alexandra). You can’t have a better demeanor than that.” Asmussen said Hot Dixie Chick reminded him of Cashier’s Dream, who won the Spinaway for him in 2001. Both fillies set track records at Churchill Downs before heading to Saratoga. Jockey Kent Desormeaux, who rode Beautician, marveled at Hot Dixie Chick. “I am thrilled with the effort by Mr. (Peter) Callahan’s horse; I can only imagine what (Hot Dixie Chick’s connections) must think of the winner,” Desormeaux said. “These are two serious racehorses. The winner has to be a super horse because my filly was ready.” When the gate opened, Bickersons, at odds of 34.75-to-1, popped out to the lead with Hot Dixie Chick pressing the pace on the inside. Beautician, meantime, stayed in close range on the outside. On the turn, Bickersons appeared to fight off an early challenge by Hot Dixie Chick, yet the winner’s rider, Robby Albarado, was just biding his time. “We kind of figured (Bickersons) would be up there in front of us — she’s quick — but I thought if Hot Dixie Chick settled in behind her she’d be fine, and she did. She had a nice opening up the fence, and she ran well. I was just being patient in there, hoping something opened up.” Hot Dixie Chick paid $2.60 for a $2 win bet. The dark bay or brown daughter of Dixie Union, who fetched $435,000 at auction this year, has now won three of four lifetime starts and earned $285,685. Asmussen said he had no plans for the filly beyond the Spinaway. “I don’t know if we look past this at all,” the trainer said. “It’s a Grade 1, the Spinaway.” |
