Zayat Stable LLC.’s J Be K posted his fourth win from six career starts on Saturday afternoon as he trounced eight rivals with a 5 ˝-length victory in the 24th running of the Grade 2, $250,000 Woody Stephens for three-year-olds at seven furlongs.

Trained by Steve Asmussen, the Silver Deputy colt, favored by the Belmont Stakes Day crowd, ignored the 96-degree temperature and sizzled on his own, leading at every call. His pace of 22.29, 44.89 and 1:08.78 cooked True Quality and allowed Silver Edition to close and get a nose up for the place.

“We have always thought so highly of him, especially when he broke the track record at Saratoga last year,” said winning owner Ahmed Zayat of J Be K, who, at Saratoga last August 29, went five and a half furlongs in 1:03 in his maiden voyage. “He is a phenomenal sprinter and showed it here. He’s getting better and maturing each time. Steve (Asmussen, trainer) has done a phenomenal job and Bob Baffert did a great job giving this horse his foundation. If he continues to stay healthy, he’ll be back in Saratoga for the King’s Bishop.”

Jockey Garrett Gomez was aboard, as J Be K returned $7.20.

“He is a speed-tactical horse,” Gomez said. “He doesn’t need the lead. He was sharp and allowed me to do what I needed to do. He has grown so much between his last race and this one. He keeps getting stronger. I was happy with the way he ran today.”

Majestic Warrior was fourth, with Ling Ling Qi, Groomedforvictory, Ready’s Image, Fatal Bullet and Run With Me in tow.
