  • Dutrow tickled with D’Funnybone, looks ahead for others
  • Ouchy feet for Worstcasescenario; Champagne for Not Macho Any More
  • Pletcher charges likely to work tomorrow for Super Saturday
  • Music Note, Cocoa Beach possible for Beldame; Girolamo likely for Jerome

Trainer Rick Dutrow reported from Aqueduct Race Track Friday morning that last weekend’s Grade 2 Futurity winner D’ Funnybone was doing well, but that he still had not made a determination on the next start for Paul Pompa, Jr.’s colt.

“We’re happy with the way he’s going,” Dutrow said. “We’ll be keeping an eye on the Champagne [Grade 1, $400,000, October 10 at Belmont Park] since it’s coming up first. He could run there, or train straight up to the Breeders’ Cup. We won’t change his training schedule either way. He’ll train right here at Aqueduct because this track is unbelievable. I’d hate to send him out there [to Santa Anita] ahead of time. We’d probably go at the last minute and run him.”

Back on the worktab for Dutrow this morning was Pompa’s This Ones For Phil, given time off after a fifth-place finish in the Grade 2 Woody Stephens here on Belmont Stakes Day. The 3-year-old gelding covered three furlongs in 37.64, breezing, in his first timed work since June 1.

Dutrow said he was considering entering Lansdon Robbins III’s 2-year-old Fuzzy Britches in the Grade 3, $150,000 Miss Grillo going 1 1/16-miles over Belmont’s grass course on October 4 depending on how she responds to a turf work planned for Saturday morning.

“If she goes well, we’ll try her in the Miss Grillo,” Dutrow said of the filly, who is 1-1-0 from two starts on dirt including a second-place finish in the Sorority Stakes at Monmouth Park earlier this month.

Finally, Dutrow had only good things to say about 2008 Juvenile Filly Champion Stardom Bound, who breezed three furlongs in 35.64 over the main track at Aqueduct on Wednesday, September 23.

“We’re very happy with that filly right now, she’s doing good,” said Dutrow, who took over her training after IEAH Stable purchased Stardom Bound at the November 2008 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Selected Fall Mixed sale for $5.7 million.

Stardom Bound capped off her 2-year-old season with a win in the 2008 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies last October. She has made three starts as a 3-year-old, winning the Las Virgenes Stakes and the Santa Anita Oaks at the southern California oval before shipping East and finishing third in the Grade 1 Ashland at Keeneland on April 4. She has not raced since, but has turned in four works at Aqueduct since August 19.

Dutrow said Friday that he was in no rush with the filly, who has a lifetime record of 5-2-1 from eight starts, but IEAH reported on their website following Stardom Bound’s Wednesday move that she is still being considered for the Grade 1, $2 million Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic on November 6 depending on her progress over the coming weeks.

Also from Aqueduct, trainer Rick Violette reported that Worstcasescenario, beaten favorite in the Grade 2 Matron last Saturday, is recuperating from a case of sore feet.

“Her feet are killing her,” said the trainer. “She’s got big, flat feet, and generally we shoe the day of [the race] and obviously that wasn’t the thing to do. She’s gone to the track the past couple of days, and we’re going to put glue-ons on her.”

Looking ahead, Violette said there were a number of options for her next start.

“We’re looking at anything from the [Grade 1] Frizette [October 10 at Belmont] to the Darley Alcibiades [October 9 at Keeneland] to waiting for the [Grade 2] Demoiselle [November 28 at Aqueduct],” he said.

Violette added that Klaravich Stable’s Not Macho Any More, second in the Grade 3 Sapling at Monmouth Park on September 5, will breeze three-quarters Saturday morning as he points toward the Grade 1, $400,000 Champagne Stakes on October 10.

“We’ll leave room for a blowout after that,” he said. “It might not be a big field, but it’s pretty salty.”

Edward P. Evans’ Quality Road and Mrs. John Magnier’s Munnings will likely have their final serious moves tomorrow for the Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup and the Grade 1 Vosburgh, respectively, trainer Todd Pletcher reported.

“With the possibility of unsettled weather Sunday morning, we’ll probably go tomorrow,” said Pletcher.

Quality Road, third as the favorite to Summer Bird in the Shadwell Travers after his record-setting performance in the Amsterdam, will be facing older horses for the first time on Super Saturday, October 3, in the 1¼- mile Jockey Club Gold Cup. Munnings, third in the Grade 1 NetJets King’s Bishop in his most recent start, defeated older horses when he won the Grade 2 Tom Fool at Belmont on July 5.

Pletcher is also priming the Saratoga-based Interactif for action next weekend in Sunday’s Grade 3 Pilgrim on the grass, and is considering the Grade 1 Beldame, also on Super Saturday, for Team Valor International’s duo of Captain’s Lover (SAF) and Unbridled Belle.

“Every one of them is doing well,” said Pletcher.

Godolphin Stables’ Music Note and Cocoa Beach could both run in the Beldame, said Rick Mettee, assistant to head trainer Saeed bin Suroor.

“They’ll both work this weekend,” said Mettee. “Obviously, Cocoa Beach won this race last year, but Music Note runs well on this track as well. In an ideal world, we’d not run them against each other but it’s tough to keep them apart.”

Mettee added that Girolamo, a good-looking 5½-length winner of an optional claimer at a mile here on September 13, is the most likely of the Godolphin 3-year-olds to start in the Grade 2 Jerome at a mile on October 11.

“It would be a little quick back for Regal Ransom and Midshipman, but it is a possibility for Vineyard Haven,” he said.

Regal Ransom won the Grade 2 Louisiana Super Derby on September 19 while Midshipman, last year’s Eclipse Award winning 2-year-old colt, made a successful return to the races here on September 18, winning his first start since taking the 2008 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.

Vineyard Haven finished first in the Grade 1 NetJets King’s Bishop at Saratoga on August 29 but was disqualified to second in that, his first start since February. The gray colt has breezed twice since, most recently going four furlongs in 49.72 on Tuesday at Belmont.
