Godolphin Stable’s Music Note, unlike favored Proud Spell, got a clean trip and a professional ride from jockey Javier Castellano Saturday afternoon to win the 52nd running of the Grade 1, $250,000 Mother Goose for three-year-old fillies at nine furlongs at Belmont Park. A daughter of A.P. Indy, Music Note won her third consecutive race in her fourth start and coasted home in 1:49.75 on the fast main track. As easy as Music Note won, Kentucky Oaks winner Proud Spell was in trouble from the start under jockey Gabriel Saez, despite it being only a four-horse field. As soon as the gates opened, Hamsa, in post 1, stumbled forward and shut off Proud Spell, who was in post 2. That opened the door for Never Retreat to take the lead. Proud Spell was quick to recover, and took position on the rail, while Music Note, who also stumbled at the start, shaded her from the outside. Never Retreat, the only one who had a clean start, set the pace of 24.83, 48.66 and 1:13.09. Music Note and jockey Javier Castellano continued to target the leader, and when they reached the stretch, she poured it on. “We fully expected that she would run a big race, but we know it would be a tough race with the (Kentucky) Oaks winner (Proud Spell) in the field,” said winning trainer Saeed bin Suroor. “I told the jockey (Javier Castellano), just keep her close. She’s got a good turn of foot.” Meanwhile, Proud Spell was getting into all sorts of problems. She was forced to check in traffic at the quarter-pole, then came out, then came back in and finally came out to bump Never Retreat. She managed to finish second on class alone, but her misadventure resulted in disqualification to third. “From the very start, we was (sic) against it,” said Proud Spell’s trainer Larry Jones. “She looks like she’s okay; she didn’t grab a quarter or nothing. From the beginning, it looked like it wasn’t going to be our day. When we needed somewhere to go, we had nowhere to go. And when it was time to go, we weren’t going.” Music Note paid $5.30 to win, and will consider several options, including Saratoga’s Grade 1, $600,000 Alabama for three-year-old fillies at a mile and a quarter on Saturday, August 16. “I had a beautiful trip, even though she stumbled at the start,” Castellano said. “I tried to position myself; I did not want to be on the lead. It was a pretty tight trip. I wanted to be in position to just push the button. She gallop out good, and I don’t think she will have a problem going farther.” |
