If Sunday’s Astoria and Tremont are any indication of how strong trainer Todd Pletcher’s barn is in the two-year-old division, it could be a long summer and fall for owners and trainers of other juveniles. With John Velazquez riding for him in both races, Pletcher won the Astoria with Glacken’s Gal and about an hour later took the Tremont with Ready’s Image.

New York bred Glacken’s Gal, owned by Lets Go Stable, remained undefeated Sunday at Belmont Park when she beat 4-5 favorite Dubit to win the 101st running of the $109,300 Astoria for two-year-old fillies, the first juvenile stakes of the season in New York.

After breaking sharply from her inside post, Glacken’s Gal took pressure from Pure and Simple and My Mammy through fractions of :21 4/5 and :45 1/5. The daughter of Smoke Glacken disposed of those two rivals and held off a late surge up the inside from Dubit to win by two lengths in a final time of 1:03 4/5.

“I wasn’t sure about her at the top of the stretch,” said Todd Pletcher. “It looked like the favorite was loaded for bear and once she found a place to go, I thought she’d be hard to beat.”

Glacken’s Gal paid $7.90 to win and the exacta with Dubit was worth $17.80. My Mammy completed a $35 trifecta.

Up next for Glacken’s Gal, who is now 2-for-2, is likely the Grade 3, $100,000 Schuylerville on Opening Day at Saratoga, July 25th.

In the $110,600 Tremont, Ready’s Image, who had broken slowly in his first two starts, came out of the gate sharply with blinkers on for the first time and never looked back, winning by 7 ¾ lengths in a final time of 1:02 4/5 for 5 ½ furlongs, just three ticks off the track record.

The win was sweet for Pletcher and owner Jim Scatuorchio, who campaigned Ready’s Image’s sire, More Than Ready, to a win in the 1999 Tremont.

“It’s scary how much he reminds us of More Than Ready and that’s why we bought him,” Pletcher said. “I have to give my dad (Jake) a lot of credit for both him and Glacken’s Gal because he picked them both out, broke them and had them ready for us.”

Izzy Speaking rallied for second in the Tremont with Twenty Eight Hours third. Ready’s Image paid $3.90 to win as the favorite. The exacta came back $70 and the trifecta was worth $305.

Ready’s Image could appear next in either the Grade 2, $150,000 Sanford July 26th or the Grade 2, $150,000 Saratoga Special August 16th.
