The logo for the 2009 Shadwell Travers Stakes (G1) features the roofline of the Saratoga Race Course Clubhouse entrance on Nelson Avenue suspended above the race name and year and speaks to the race’s heritage as the cornerstone of the summer meeting. The $1 million Shadwell Travers, also known as “The Mid-Summer Derby,” is the oldest stakes race for three-year-olds in the United States and is the highlight of the Saratoga meeting. The long list of Travers winners includes such greats as Man o’War, Whirlaway, Native Dancer, and Alydar. “Shadwell Farm has always been supportive of New York racing and the opportunity to be involved both at Belmont and Saratoga is a wonderful honor and an exciting experience we continue to look forward to,” said Rick Nichols, vice president and general manager of Shadwell Farm. “The history surrounding [the Travers] and the fact that it remains a dirt race going a mile and a quarter makes it a special privilege for us, especially as the race celebrates its 140th running this year.” Named for the first president of Saratoga Race Course, William R. Travers, the winning owner of its inaugural running in 1864, this year’s Shadwell Travers will be run on Saturday, August 29 and televised nationally to 98 million households on ESPN and worldwide on ESPN International.
