The GALLANT FOX was inaugurated in 1939 at Old Jamaica Race Track and named for the Belair Stud's Triple Crown winner of 1930. Gallant Fox was a bay colt by Sir Gallahad III, and strangely, is best remembered for a race he did not win - The Travers. In that event, he was defeated by Jim Dandy, a 100 1 shot. His best offspring was Omaha, the 1935 Triple Crown winner.
The GALLANT FOX was run at Jamaica prior to 1958. Run at a mile and one sixteenth from 1948 to 1953; at a mile and three-quarters in 1960. In 1972, Autobiography finished first, but was disqualified and placed second.
* The 2000 edition was scheduled for December 30th, but adverse weather conditions forced the cancellation of that card. As such, the race was contested on January 1, 2001.
