The COMELY was named after the filly who won the first running of the Fall Highweight Handicap in 1914. This was quite an accomplishment, as COMELY was only a two year old running against older horses. In 1960, the conditions of the COMELY were changed to the present conditions for three year old fillies.
The COMELY was run at Jamaica from l945 to l95l and in l959; at Empire City in l952 and l953; at Belmont Park in 1976, 1981, 1984, and 1985. Not run from 1954 to 1958. Run at a mile and a sixteenth, for three year old fillies, from l945 to 1953; and for two year olds only, at five furlongs, in 1959. Run in two divisions in 1953, 1963, and 1970. Run at seven furlongs from 1960 to 1990. Run at a mile and a sixteenth in 1993.
