The WEST POINT, a turf event for New York-breds, is named for the U. S. Military Academy situated on the west bank of the Hudson River, in Orange County, about 50 miles north of New York City. Since its founding nearly two centuries ago, the Military Academy has accomplished its mission by developing cadets in four critical areas: intellectual, physical, military, and moral-ethical, a four-year process called the "West Point Experience.” The Academy will celebrate its bicentennial anniversary in 2002.
The WEST POINT was run as the West Point Stakes, for three year olds at a mile and a furlong on the main track, in 1980. Run at a mile and a sixteenth from 1981 to 1987. In 1984, Fearless Leader finished first but was disqualified and placed second. In 1993, Fourstardave finished first but was disqualified and placed fifth. Run in two divisions in 1987.
