The HOPEFUL has a meaning to its name. It is the first time two year olds are asked to go longer than six furlongs in a stakes event. That means that their owners are “hopeful” that they have colts of classic possibilities. The quality of the fields is borne out by the fact that 14 Hopeful winners went on to win The Belmont Stakes the next year, two finished second, and three third, in that mile and a half event, which is the third and final leg of the Triple Crown.
The HOPEFUL was run at Belmont Park (Widener Course) in l943, l944, and l945. Not run in l9ll and l9l2. Run at six furlongs prior to l925; at six and a half furlongs from 1925 through 1993. It has been run at seven furlongs since 1994. Run in two divisions in l974 and l975. In 1979, Rockhill Native finished first, but was disqualified and placed sixth. In 2000, there was a Dead Heat between Yonaguska and City Zip.
