The SARANAC, inaugarated in 1901 at Saratoga, is named for a village in Clinton County, New York, 132 miles northeast of Utica in the Adirondack Mountains. It is a well-known health resort.
The SARANAC was run at Saratoga from 1901 to 1942; at Jamaica from 1948 to 1956; and at Aqueduct from 1957 to 1961, from 1963 to 1967, 1972 to 1974, and in 1976. Not run in 1911, 1912, and from 1943 to 1947. Run at a mile and a furlong from 1901 to 1908, in 1910, and again in 1996; at a mile and a sixteenth from 1948 to 1959. Run on the main track prior to 1979. Run in two divisions in 1989.
