Except for The Ladies Handicap, inaugurated in 1868, The ALABAMA, for three year old fillies, is the oldest run race for females in the country. It was started in 1872, when August Belmont's Woodbine took the first running.
The ALABAMA was run at Belmont Park in 1943, 1944, and 1945. Not run from 1893 to 1896, from 1898 to 1900, nor in 1911 and 1912. Run at a mile and a furlong prior to 1901, in 1904, and from 1906 to 1916; at a mile and a sixteenth in 1901, 1902, and on the turf in 1903; and at a mile and five sixteenths in 1905. Stamina, in 1908, and Bonnet Ann, in 1942, each finished first but were disqualified and placed last. Lady Pitt finished first in 1966 but was disqualified and placed second. Heartland finished first in 1968 but was disqualified and placed second.
