The SHUVEE Handicap is named for the 1969 Triple Tiara winner. A daughter of Nashua-Levee, Shuvee was a homebred product of Mr. & Mrs. Whitney Stone's Morven Stud in Virginia. She was the first of her gender to win the weight-for-age two-mile Jockey Club Gold Cup, and she did it two years in a row. Appropriately, Shuvee was named best older filly or mare champion in both 1970 and 1971. Trained by W. C. "Mike" Freeman, Shuvee was retired with a career record of 16 victories from 44 starts, finishing second 10 times and third six times, with earnings of $890,445.

The SHUVEE Handicap was run at one mile in 1976. Secret Lanvin finished first in 1977 but was disqualified and placed third. Run at a mile-and-a-sixteenth from 1977 to 1992, and in 1994. In 1995 the SHUVEE was changed back to its original distance of one mile.
