The SHEEPSHEAD BAY Handicap was named after the old Brooklyn Racetrack that ran from 1880 through 1910. Sheepshead Bay was closed down when the Hughes Ban eliminated all racing in New York in 1911 and 1912, and was never reopened.
The SHEEPSHEAD BAY Handicap was run at Jamaica in 1959 at a mile and a sixteenth. Run at Aqueduct from 1960 to 1974 and in 1976. Run at a mile and a furlong in 1960, 1961 and 1976; at a mile and a sixteenth on the turf in 1963 and 1964. Run at a mile on the main track in 1962. Run at a mile and three-sixteenths from 1965 to 1974, and on the main track in 1974. Open to both sexes prior to 1962. Run in two divisions in 1968, 1970, 1972, 1976 and 1982. Run at a mile and a quarter in 1975 and from 1977 to 1979. Run on the main track in 1990.
