The MAID OF THE MIST is named for the famous lineage of steamboats operating on Upstate New York’s Niagara River. The first in the line was launched in 1846. An article in the May 27, 1846 Niagara Courier stated the following: “We regard the launching of the steamer as an event something more than ordinary... the scenery around, the majesty of the thundering cataract above, the fierce rapids, the high embankments on both sides...combine to produce a scene surpassingly good and romantic. Whoever visits Niagara will not have seen half its wonders till they have taken a trip on the steamer The Maid.” There have been seven Maid of The Mist vessels in all, with Maid of the Mist VII having been christened in 1997. The steamboats now largely serve as tourist attractions, offering daily cruises to the public. |
