The BELDAME derives its name from the great race mare of 1903, 1904, and 1905. She was a winner of 17 races in 31 starts for earnings of $102,570. Bred and owned by August Belmont, she gained her best renown in 1904, as a three-year-old, when she was under lease to Newton Bennington. That year she won 12 of 14 starts while beating the best older males of her time. Among her stakes victories were the Suburban, Carter, Ladies Handicap, Gazelle, and Alabama. In 1956, Beldame was elected to the National Museum of Racing`s Hall of Fame.
The BELDAME was run at Aqueduct prior to 1957, in 1959, and from 1962 to 1968. Run at a mile and a sixteenth in 1939; at a mile and a furlong from 1940 to 1976. Run in two divisions in 1946, 1947, and 1952. Run as a handicap prior to 1960. Dead heat in 1942. Run at the distance of a mile and a sixteenth in 1939 and 1990; run at a mile and a quarter from 1977 to 1989.
